The lighthouse at Akrotiri Drapano is located approximately 26km east of Chania and 2km north of the Kokkino Horio of Apokoronas.
Close to it is the amazing underwater cave of Elephants, a very popular destination for diving and Koutalis beach.
The lighthouse was built in 1864 by the French Lighthouse Company and still stands in very good condition at an altitude of 50m, on the edge of a vertical cliff.
The lighthouse tower has an octagonal shape and its height is 7m, while next to it is the stone residence of the lighthouse keeper. Like the rest of the lighthouses of Crete, it joined the Greek lighthouse network in 1912, while it was destroyed by the Germans in 1941, only to be rebuilt in 1948.
Access is via a good road from the picturesque Kokkino Horio.
